What the heck is
Bearded Broome?

Bearded Broome is a local fundraising organization inspired by the national entity, “No Shave November.” Participants who are willing/able are encouraged to forgo shaving for the month of November with the goal of this change in appearance to create a talking point to bring awareness to the fundraising cause. After participating in “No Shave November” for several years, and realizing that in addition to the organization being national, all funds raised were distributed nationally as well, our founder was inspired to create a local fundraising group that keeps all funds raised local to benefit our community and hence, Bearded Broome was born. Since our inception in 2021, we have raised over $79,000, all of which has gone directly to CHOW. To learn more about Bearded Broome, check out this interview on WBNG’s Around the Tiers.

About Chow

Hunger is a larger problem in our area than many people realize.  Currently, it’s estimated that 1 out of 4 children and 1 out of 7 people may not know where their next meal is coming from.  CHOW (Community Hunger Outreach Warehouse) was formed in 1976 as a way to better coordinate the effort to provide food for those in need in Broome County. The program started with a network of 14 food pantries, and has since expanded to over 100 in 2023! In 2022, CHOW distributed more than 2.4 million pounds of food (over 2 million meals), right here, in Broome County. And the team at CHOW did it all at zero cost to any of the 100+ pantries, meal sites, or residential homes they support primarily thanks to local donors, like you. To learn more about CHOW visit their website here.

FAQ

What if I can’t, or don’t want to, grow a beard?
We know that growing a beard is not an option for everyone, whether due to workplace requirements, not being able to grow facial hair, or just not wanting to! If you are interested in participating as a fundraiser without growing a beard you can make a small change to your appearance that will initiate a conversation. We here at Bearded Broome suggest wearing something orange, the color associated with hunger awareness. Something as simple as wearing an orange tie or painting your nails orange are two great ways to bring attention to this cause!

What is Causevox?
Causevox is the official fundraising platform of Bearded Broome. BeardedBroome.com staff can assist in setting up, adding offline donations, and answering questions you may have about Causevox.

How do I register my group?
Registering a large group is easy! Email us at beardedbroome@gmail.com and we’ll create a team page for you.

Where does the money go?
100% of the proceeds go to support the programs and services of Broome County CHOW. You can learn more about CHOW by clicking here.

How much of my donation actually goes to CHOW?
Bearded Broome is proud to be completely volunteer-run and no donated funds are used for administrative costs or salaries. The only necessary expenses associated with our fundraising are for transaction fees- 3% per transaction to the fundraising platform (Causevox) and 2.2% +$0.30 per transaction to the credit card processing company (Stripe). When making your donation we offer the option to add an additional 5% to your donation to cover transaction fees resulting in all but pennies of your donation going directly to CHOW!

Can I submit offline donations?
Offline donations can be mailed directly to the Broome County CHOW offices for processing. Please mail checks to the address below with the check made out to CHOW and “Bearded Broome” and your fundraising page name on the memo line, so we can count the donation towards your fundraising goal and so we can contact you should we have any questions.
